  • Offering Compliments Can Be Powerful

Who among us doesn't like to receive compliments? OK, some people are uncomfortable receiving compliments and respond with phrases including "it was nothing" or "no big deal" or even an awkward "thanks." I realize that while i find myself responding this way occasionally. In business, just as in your life, offering compliments could be powerful, and will significantly help in helping employee motivation. For compliments to function, though, they must have several components:

    1. They ought to be genuine are available from the heart. If you give compliments just to motivate employees, they are going to think your words aren't authentic, and also you won't obtain the value you intended.

    2. Be specific. Don't simply say "good job with the presentation." Let them know specifically what about the presentation was effective. Did they keep your audience engaged? Was the content just right? The harder specific you're, the higher the likelihood they will continue this same behavior.

    3. Tell the recipient in the moment. Whether they are dressed especially nicely today, handled a customer situation masterfully, or you've noticed them working on improving their skills in a specific area...anything, let them know right them. The strength of the compliment is within the present, not two weeks from now once they won't even remember the things they did.

    4. Provide them with freely and often. You can not use compliments once a week and hope it will help with employee motivation. You have to give them freely and frequently. That is not to express every day, or even every week. Noticing what others are doing and letting them know is impactful.

    5. Encourage others to supply compliments. It's always nice to hear out of your boss which they think learn about something wonderful. It's exciting to hear it from others...colleagues and other managers. If you develop a culture where workers are encouraged to recognize one another's performance, it can make it effective beyond imagination.

    6. Be careful how often you compliment. Yes, you need to recognize a job well done, but you don't wish to dilute the value of the compliment. Employee motivation will be lessened in the event you compliment all things. Recognize the large accomplishments and share your feelings on them.

Offering compliments will go a considerable ways toward improving employee motivation, if they're used properly at the right time. You might have trouble accepting compliments from others so you find it equally difficult to provide them with. If you recognize yourself here, remember: You are not complimenting on just anything, but on stuff that the truth is as significant. Don't start to large when you have to, but start dishing out those compliments.
